Brent: So let’s get started, why realism, mate?

Remis: Well, realism is what I’ve always enjoyed drawing, so it’s also naturally what I enjoy doing on the skin too

Brent: Can you draw? (*laughs)

Remis: Sometimes (*laughs), I do try (*laughs). I did much more drawing back in my teens.

Brent: You try, that’s good. I have a friend that does awesome tattoos but he can’t draw (*laughs)… So how’s it going with your work, are you looking at changing your style at all?

Remis: Oh yes, definitely, when I started traveling the world and seeing different tattoo artists with different styles, I started looking at how I could incorporate those ideas in my own realistic work, even learning traditional ideas. That was always and still is a fun challenge for me.

Brent: So you also learn from us old guys too, but it’s funny you say that because we’ve about that before, not just making a sticker for the skin, but making it work with the skin even with the realism.

Remis: Yeah that’s something I aim to do.

Brent: And I know you’re also into photography, but with a photo a frame is always just a square. But in tattooing, with the photo being on the skin it changes, with an arm or a leg it’s not a square and also not a flat object.

Remis: Exactly and that’s where I for example can bring in some of the traditional styles, and play around with that. Have some fun with that.

Brent: Ok, so when do you get back to Europe?

Remis: Back to Europe in a couple weeks, returning to my studio in the hills of Dublin, miss the view man, I love it there, very serene. My customers are looking out on the countryside while I’m working on them. Now I’m in Brazil enjoying a bit of kite surfing and relaxing.

Brent: Are you not doing any conventions while you’re in Brazil?

Remis: No, not at the moment but about three weeks ago I did Led’s tattoo convention in São Paulo which was really good, and I think the next convention will be in Germany.

Brent: So what else are we talking about?

Remis: Well, let’s talk some more about tattooing, traveling and combining the job with pleasure, the opportunities we get to see the world and meeting new friends. So back to tattooing. Like you asked me, are you planning on changing or adapting your style?

Brent: I’m actually going even back to even older ways of tattooing, going back to the bone, tortoise shell and wood again. Everyone is now using needles and machines, and the traditional techniques are dying out so I’d like to rebirth that properly, to hold on to that, it is part of tattoo heritance.

Remis: That sounds interesting.

Brent: That’s what I’m working on right now. So where do you think realistic tattooing is heading, or even whether it has a future?

Remis: I do think it will change, the obvious change is increasing the size first, but also like you were saying about the frames, if an artist only does realistic, it doesn’t always frame well with the body. So I think the next important thing is to start combining the realistic with the older techniques, to truly make it work with the shape of the body. There’s already a few guys mixing the realistic with the new school styles, which is very interesting and I think that will start getting more popular now.

Brent: I think it needs to start body shaping and playing with depth of colour, contrast and lights and dark more. And not just in the image itself, but the piece as a whole.

Remis: Exactly, but I do think it’s already heading in this direction. Few new cool artists are already doing these types of techniques.

Brent: If you look at some of the big, bold pieces some of these guys were doing, the colour realistic stuff hasn’t really gone that way yet, has it? With the contrast and stuff, as much as the black and grey
